A Tale of Two Earps: Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp

When one considers the Wild West culturally, one might first and foremost think of Clint Eastwood or John Wayne- somewhat contemporary figures that represent the golden age of depictions of the untamed American west of the 19th century. As famous and as synonymous as their likenesses are with images we have of fearless gunslingers, they never were the real deal. It is therefore an interesting experience, as a fan of the genre, to see a western dealing with people who really lived in and influenced the modern day image of the Wild West.
I realise this is yet another western-focused post, but you tell me of a better way to finish the streak than to talk about two considerably different movies depicting the same story: the story of the legendary lawman Wyatt Earp.

THE GREAT SILENCE: Sloppy, Brutal, Brilliant

I strongly dislike warm weather. There are many reasons for it, but I generally cite fashion as the main one; I like jackets. (I’m particularly partial to Levi’s denim jackets- I even wear the sherpa variety as my winter coat.) Therefore, it is safe to say I enjoy a cold winter more than I enjoy a hot summer.
It’s for this fact that I wanted to find a western that takes place in snow, as most of them take place in deserts. And so I came across The Great Silence, a spaghetti western- the best kind of western.

What I Saw In BONE TOMAHAWK

The five of you that read my latest post will know that I’m a sucker for westerns, my favorite genre in all of fiction. The extra two who are reading this latest post just found out. Recently, I’ve been especially keen on seeing recently released westerns: I’ve seen the Netflix show Godless (quite good), The Duel (a bit “out there,” but enjoyable) and most recently Bone Tomahawk.

Stranger Things 2 [TV/Netflix Review]

We all love Stranger Things, don’t we? Of course we do, it’s awesome, it’s amazing, it came out of nowhere and it made all of us non-80s kids feel nostalgic for the good old days when we weren’t even sperms yet.
Stranger Things really was something special, as attested to by yours truly here, and it comes as no surprise that it was a big hit with audiences, contributing greatly to the upward trend in streaming service revenues. And as such, it spawned a sequel, entitled as if it’s a film: Stranger Things 2. That’s what the title card says, so I’m going with that, although it’s weird, and yet the way shows ought to be, and should always have been. Because it’s cool.

The Wasted Potential of Assassin’s Creed 3’s Story [Just a Thought]

I’m doing something a little different here. I haven’t posted anything in a while, partially due to laziness, but mostly due to lack of inspiration. I have two shows I want to get to, but the words aren’t coming out just yet.
So, in the meantime, I had a thought. Just a thought. I had a thought about my favorite Assassin’s Creed game: Assassin’s Creed 3. That’s right, I said it. AC3 is my favorite AC. Not my favorite to play solely from a gameplay standpoint, but my favorite in terms of setting, visual design, story and themes (and the music, good Lord, the music!). In fact, I will go as far as to say Assassin’s Creed 3 has by far the best story in the franchise, but also the worst execution of it.
Here are some of my thoughts on why this game’s plot has so much wasted potential.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword [Film Review]

After a long time of contemplating it, I decided to go for it and watched Guy Ritchie’s latest, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. I know how that may sound, I wasn’t necessarily keen on giving it a go, right? Well, not really, I was actually looking forward to the film, albeit with my expectations in check.
I realise this review comes long after the film has been hammered practically into oblivion by professional critics. That may have influenced my overall opinion of the film, which after all was said in done, was actually quite on the positive side of things.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 [Film Review]

In a very welcome sequel to Marvel’s somewhat-surprise hit Guardians of the Galaxy, the Guardians are back for another interstellar adventure.
As a big fan of the first film, I was very excited about this, and my expectations were high coming in, which I try to avoid, but it couldn’t be helped this time around.
